Fishing For Pike With Grandpa
By Reavis E. Dixon
Omer Dixon who was born July 4, 1911, was only about eight or nine years old that spring, and his Grandpa "Tiger Jim Davis" (James Christopher Columbus Davis - Civil War Veteran) had a strong hankering to fish for some Red Fin Pike in the little mill branch which parallels the Ramah Church Road in Pierce County, Georgia.

Because of his advanced years, Jim’s daughter Bessie Davis Dixon, sent her son Omer, on the fishing trip with his Grandfather. She just didn’t want Jim alone in the woods. In those days, eighty two or eighty three years old was an extremely old person.

Then, like now, a fishing trip was a joyous occasion for a little boy of eight or nine. Omer happily tagged along with his Grandpa, and the two of them struck out for the creek before sunup the next morning.

"Tiger Jim" rigged a small pole for his grandson to use in fishing for "Red eyes", and readied himself to match wits, and skills, with the Red Fin Pike in the creek.

In his later years Omer Dixon frequently, and gleefully, told the story of the adventure. "Grandpa caught several Pike", he said. "We had a good little string of fish to carry home. But the funniest thing was, every time one would strike, and Grandpa would miss him, he would say ‘Son of a bi...’."

That night, Omer’s mother asked him how Grandpa had gotten along that day. Omer said "Well Ma, everything went fine, except, Grandpa sure did talk ugly to the fish."
